Forum on Problem-Based Learning
In response to the strong interest expressed at ACSME 2015, FYiMaths held a Forum on Problem-Based Learning in mathematics at the University of Technology Sydney, 9 February 2017.
We define problem-based learning in its broadest sense, as anything that uses authentic problems (whether abstract or otherwise) as the catalyst for developing an understanding of a topic.
We showcased current examples of how PBL is being used in classrooms, and discussed how it contributes to the development of graduate skills. We heard from industry representatives on what they value about maths graduates (and what they feel is missing), and discussed how PBL might be useful. We also had the chance to ask the experts about the pitfalls and benefits of PBL.
