This three day international research conference focuses on the journey schools and teachers make as they reimagine and redevelop their learning spaces.
In Australia and many other countries, school design is being transformed with new flexible, innovative learning environments. Research is showing innovative learning environments are not a magic cure, but evidence is mounting that they constitute a powerful tool that – if used well – improves student educational experiences. We can now say schools (and teachers) navigate a transformative journey as they re-imagine their learning spaces. What is involved in making the journey from traditional to innovative learning environments? What is the latest research telling us about how teachers can be supported on this journey? The program will feature research presentations by graduate and early career researchers, educators and designers along with workshops, discussions and school tours. This event aims to connect research with practice and is ideal for teachers, school leaders, architects and policy makers involved in designing or refurbishing schools or developing teaching practices that use space to support innovative learning. Date & Time: Tuesday 24 September 2019, 1-2pm AEST (GMT+10) Speaker: Tim Moroney (QUT) Title: Teaching first-year Computational Science with an emphasis on collaborative problem solving Abstract: This talk will describe my experiences in designing and teaching a first-year unit in Computational Science at QUT. While many students commencing STEM degrees have significant experience with programming, others commence their studies with little to no programming experience, and often little appreciation for the importance of computation and simulation across the STEM disciplines. I will address some of the challenges in teaching a multidisciplinary cohort of Science, Information Technology, Mathematics and Engineering students with diverse backgrounds in programming and mathematics, and discuss some of the approaches taken in this unit, particularly regarding collaborative problem solving. Location: Online via Zoom: https://unimelb.zoom.us/j/787759102 Use the link above to participate on your PC, Mac, iOS or Android device. See here for details for connecting via a H.323/SIP videoconferencing room. Seminar recording: will be available from the seminar website afterwards |
