The second international "Indigenizing University Mathematics" conference will be held in the week starting 28th November 2022, mainly online but also with a limited face-to-face attendance option in Newcastle, Australia. You are invited to register via the Eventbrite link at https://www.ium2022.org . The conference will take place November 28-December 1 in Canada, at times in the late afternoon or early evening depending on time zone. The language of the conference with be English
Indigenization is something that is being asked of us more and more by our universities, as well as being something that increasingly many individuals care about and are interested in. However, it is not always obvious how to proceed in our disciplines and spaces. Thus, the purposes of the conference are to collectively give us an opportunity to think and learn about what it may mean to Indigenize our practices and curricula in university mathematics and statistics; and to give us a chance to build and extend the relationships, partnerships, and shared understandings necessary for this work. In addition to the online option for registration, there will be a small face-to-face hub in Newcastle, Australia from which many of the Australian-based presenters will present. The Newcastle venue has limited capacity: in addition to the presenters, we will have room for about 30 registrants. In Newcastle, the timing is such that the presentations run from 9am-1pm each day with lunches provided afterwards and plenty of opportunity to mingle. For those in Australia, we encourage face-to-face registration from across the country, including from Heads of Discipline. There will also be an extremely limited face-to-face option at First Nations University in Regina, Saskatchewan. Please contact me (Edward Doolittle <[email protected]>) if you think you might like to attend in person. Feel free to contact me or conference co-chair Dr Judy-anne Osborn <[email protected]> if you have any questions. The International Association for Statistical Education (IASE https://iase-web.org/) presents our October webinar. Lucia Zapata-Cardona, Universidad de Antioquia and Travis Weiland, University of Houston, are presenting, and we welcome you all to join us. We also ask you to share this invitation with high school statistics teachers and other statistics education networks in your country. We welcome IASE and non-IASE members to the session.
Details about the webinar are below and on our webinar page https://iase-web.org/Webinars.php. Critical Theory in Statistics Education 6 October 2022; 18:00 UTC (see below for localized date/time) Webinar duration: 90 minutes Presenters: Lucia Zapata-Cardona, Colombia and Travis Weiland, USA We are hoping to have this in dual languages – Spanish and English Register here https://forms.gle/VDdJmHBrmRhgfqoM7 We are in an information age where data is constantly being collected and analyzed under the guise of benefiting all. This would seem to be a time for statistics and data science education to flourish. However, many of the algorithms and processes have baked into them the same biases as those who created them. Critical theory provides a lens to interrogate systemic issues of injustice and address crises in society. Given our current state of democracies in crisis across the globe we plan to discuss ways that statistics and data science educators can and have incorporated ideas from critical theory into their work in statistics and data science education. We provide some background into critical theory and how it has been taken up in mathematics education work and then discuss how these ideas could and have been used in the context of statistics and data science education work. Our goal is also to foster dialogue over these ideas so significant time will be devoted to discussion and questions. Starting at: 7 Oct, 2:00 am Perth, Beijing 7 Oct, 4:00 am Brisbane 7 Oct, 4:30 am Adelaide 7 Oct, 5:00 am Sydney 7 Oct, 7:00 am Auckland Register here https://forms.gle/VDdJmHBrmRhgfqoM7 The FYi Maths national workshop will be held at Western Sydney University on July 18 and 19. The theme for this year's workshop is "Teaching, learning and assessing post COVID: lessons learnt during the pandemic".
We have several talks already locked in including a keynote for Dr Mark Hodds from Coventry University and discussion of the survey which was sent out last week on mathematics assessment. Workshop details are as follows: When: July 18 & 19 Time: 10 am to 5 pm Venue: Western Sydney Uni Parramatta Campus (The workshop will also be run over Zoom but we would really love to see you in person!) Both workshops are free and will take place at the main campus in Ryde, in the Numeracy Centre and the adjacent Access Grid Room. The talks will be streamed via Zoom for those who cannot make it to Sydney, a link will be sent closer to the day. The theme for FYiMaths NSW is “Online Learning & Teaching”, but if you want to talk about other things that is fine also. Indeed, as we all know, workshop themes are not intended to be strictly applied! At the conclusion of another year with COVID-19, we may have to ruminate on the pros and cons of online learning, teaching, and student support, and how to integrate the best of both worlds in an appropriate blended teaching strategy. The event details and registration information are below. Please notice that if you want to attend in person, you will have to be doubly vaccinated. We’re still organising the schedules for these days, so stay tuned for these if you register. To register, please complete the form here by Friday 9 December: https://forms.gle/c6Xu6JmRYq5sxgiJ7 As you may know, a conference on the learning and teaching of calculus took place in August 2019 at the University of Agder in Kristiansand, Norway. Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, a second calculus conference has been delayed most likely for a summer 2023 date. We are however delighted to announce that, in the meantime, there will be a series of virtual events to note outstanding developments in research on the learning and teaching of calculus!
The first virtual event centers around a ZDM special issue (SI) on calculus, to appear in June 2021. Prior to this, the authors of the ZDM SI articles will produce video presentations of their papers (about 6 minutes each). The videos will be made available to event registrants around May 25. The June event itself will take the form of a virtual meeting of 60-90 minutes hosted by the SI editors, Pat Thompson and Guershon Harel. During the event, there will be opportunity for (i) Q&A with the authors (ii) comments on foci for future research on calculus education. SAVE THE DATE: The June event will run twice to cater for people in different time zones:
this webpage shows links to registration. We expect several similar events over the next two years as there are three more journal SIs devoted to calculus in the pipeline and a book on calculus in the IMPACT series. The events will contribute to the foci of a conference on calculus in the summer of 2023 (which we hope will be one where delegates are physically present). This workshop builds on the activities of the FYiMaths network by providing a local forum for the exchange of education-related issues and ideas and professional/academic networking.
